A Day In the Life Of Digital Media
Social media has a large impact upon my daily life and potential career path.I hope to work my way into a career in Public Relations, Digital Media, or Digital Marketing. By finishing up my bachelors degree within the coming months, I hope to move forward within my current company and possible be taught how to use these services within an actual working environment.
Out of all of the social media platforms available, I would have to say that Facebook is my go-to. It's where I see the most actions and interactions from my personal friends as well as brands that I am interested in. I also find myself watching YouTube for AT LEAST an hour or two a day with most of the videos I watch being streamed through the app on the television. My wife and friends use Instagram quite a bit and I find myself using the app whenever I get a new notification if someone posted. It is with these specific applications and platforms in which I enjoy using the most. From a technical standpoint, I find them easy to use in addition to being fun and creative when I contribute my own content to those platforms. The only thing negative would have to be some of the content OTHER people post. I try my absolute best to stay away from posting about anything political, religious or controversial (fake news) on any platform. However, I do have friends and acquaintances that seem to lack personal filters and don't check sources in which they are getting their news from.
The apps in which I don't normally use would be Twitter, Snapchat and TikTok. However, I will say that my goal is to be better at using and creating content for Twitter. I have just found that I have yet to have much success with Twitter and want to learn more about algorithms and how followers are generated organically through networking and tweeting using the correct criteria and hashtags. Snapchat just gets down right annoying sometimes depending on what my friends share. I find some content on Snapchat very annoying, especially one some Snaps an entire concert. TikTok is somewhat of a curiosity to me as I see the potential but don't see enough content that would pertain to me. My wife LOVES watching Snapchat, and some work friends love creating funny videos. I would like to make content along with my wife but our schedules have been conflicting to which we simply don't have time to try it out.
When I get emails from companies, I would guess that 80-90% of those emails are advertisements more than anything. Many of those emails include that I am part of a mailing list that I am subscribed to that I don't remember agreeing to or signing up for myself. I have been trying unsubscribe as new company emails come in. However, I keep emails from Disney, Delta, Target, Best Buy and GameStop as sometimes I find content that I find relevant or useful. I have also been good about finding fraud emails from places like eBay and Paypal about "action required." A quick look at the address the email was sent from usually shows a long and fraudulent email address.
I have noticed that Digital Media has become the communications channel most utilized in Marketing in general. Greg Sterling of the Marketing Land website reported that, "YouTube kicked in $15 billion as Google ad revenues topped $134 billion in 2019." I am not simply reporting the money Google earned from hosting ads. I am instead showing how many companies use platforms like YouTube and Google that result in such large amount of profits. Digital marketing has a certain form of "omnipresence" within our lives. It is almost constantly in front of us without even knowing. Even while I am at work there is a screen that promotes other in-company properties to guests that visit but very few recognize that they are staring at an advertisement through a website.
I will continue to use and develop my own skills using social media in hopes that my network reach will go out far beyond what it is now. I hope that with my ongoing education, I can refine those skills not just for personal use, but also to possibly put into practice within a career. I am confident that Digital Media will keep growing and maintain the title of the best sources of modern marketing.
